Choosing a photographer for your senior session can be a daunting task. There are likely dozens of photographers in your area, and each of them runs their business in a unique way. So how are you supposed to find your perfect match when there are so many options? I am here to help! In this post I am giving you 5 tips to help you find the perfect photographer
5 tips for choosing a senior photographer
1. Make sure you their editing and shooting style
In my opinion, this is the most important factor to consider when researching your options. There are so many ways to edit a photo-light and airy, dramatic and moody, black and white, or vintage film just to name a few. Take some time to research as many portfolios as possible to get an idea of what style you love. You also want to know if the photographer uses natural light, artificial lighting or a mix of both? Finally, do you like how the photographer poses their clients? If you prefer modern, editorial poses then a photographer that has a very traditional portrait style may not be your best bet. However, if you love a timeless, classic pose then a photographer who shoots at unusual angles may not be right for you. Each photographer uses light, editing techniques and posing to help create their signature style. You just want to pick a photographer who has a style that you love because your photos will have the same look and feel.
2. Think about how you will show off your images
Some people love to hang some of their photos in beautiful frames on the wall while others prefer to have an heirloom quality album of their favorite session images. Maybe you’re more interested in posting your favorite photos for #seniorsunday on Instagram. Regardless of how you want to share your images, make sure the photographer you choose provides exactly what you need. Ask to see samples of the products they offer. A high end, professional photographer will be more than happy to show off their artwork. And if digitals are important to you, make sure you ask if they are available to purchase. Some photographers specialize in artwork and may not sell the digital files.
3. Check out the reviews
We can’t even imagine eating at a new restaurant or ordering cute shoes off the internet without reading the reviews first. The same should be true when choosing your photographer. Check out their reviews on Google, Facebook, IG and their website. What are people saying? Did they have a great experience? Did the photographer help them feel confident and beautiful? Do they love their final images and products? You want to work with a professional who delivers what they promise and creates an amazing experience for their clients.
4. Think about the experience you want
Are you the kind of person that doesn’t want or need a consultation prior to your session? Maybe you just want a quick photoshoot and a digital gallery of your images without spending a lot of time and energy making appointments and chatting with your photographer. On the other hand, you may really love a personalized experience where you connect with your photographer ahead of time to plan your whole session, see samples of the products they offer and make sure all of your questions are answered. There isn’t a right or wrong way to do it as long as you find someone who can provide the experience you want.
5. Think about your budget
I put budget at the end of the list because it should be the final, deciding factor when choosing between 2 or 3 photographers that meet all your other criteria. Although budget is extremely important, I think it’s a mistake to make it the only reason you choose a certain photographer. The old adage, “You get what you pay for” holds true when it comes to hiring a photographer. You can always find a friend or family member who is a hobbyist and is willing to shoot your session for free, and that is a very kind gesture. But I encourage you to look at their portfolio before you commit to anyone. These are photos that will be hanging on the wall in your parent’s house for the rest of their lives, so you want to make sure you won’t regret your decision. A professional photographer who offers a custom experience, heirloom quality products and has the skills and knowledge to create flattering and creative images will likely charge more than someone who takes photos as a hobby. As with the other tips in this post, there is no wrong answer. You just want to make sure you are fully informed about what you get for your money prior to booking your session and signing a contract.
Going through each of these steps is worth the effort. Your senior photos are a milestone experience and one that you want to look back on with really great memories.
